Senior Cruise Tips

Hawaii cruises for seniors

The short answer

Hawaii is part of the U.S., which helps with health cover, and a cruise lets you see several islands without flying between them. Round trips from the West Coast add several sea days each way; island-based sailings keep you in port more.

Two ways to cruise Hawaii

  • Round trip from the West Coast. Several relaxing sea days each way. No long flight to Hawaii.
  • Sailing among the islands. Fly to Hawaii, then spend most days in port.

Health cover

Hawaii is part of the U.S. The sea days between California and Hawaii are a different matter: ships there are far from any U.S. port.

What the rules say

  • Medicare.gov: Part B may pay for medically necessary care on a cruise ship if the doctor is legally allowed to treat on the ship and the ship is in a U.S. port, or no more than 6 hours from one, when you get the care.

Ask Kathryn a question

Tell her who is traveling, roughly when, and anything she should know — like a wheelchair, oxygen or a special diet. She will suggest ships that fit.

Please don’t include passport or payment details. Kathryn never needs them to answer a question.
