Cruising on dialysis
The short answer
Cruise ships do not provide hemodialysis. MSC allows guests who can manage home peritoneal dialysis on their own. Princess says its medical staff are not equipped for dialysis care. People on hemodialysis plan with specialist dialysis-at-sea providers on selected sailings, with their nephrologist's approval.

Princess Cruises: Ship medical facilities are similar to an urgent care center. The medical staff are not equipped to provide specialized dialysis care, and ships have no back-up battery support for dialysis equipment.

MSC Cruises: MSC does not provide individual hemodialysis. Guests who are stable and can manage home peritoneal dialysis on their own are welcome to sail. MSC notes there are risks in cruising while on dialysis.

How people on dialysis plan a cruise
- Start with your nephrologist. Ask whether cruising is safe for you, and for how long.
- Peritoneal dialysis at home? Some lines accept guests who manage it on their own. Tell the line when you book, and ask how supplies are delivered and stored.
- Hemodialysis? The ship cannot provide it. Specialist companies arrange dialysis at sea on selected sailings, with their own staff and equipment. Ask your renal team about them.
- Insurance. Make sure your travel medical cover knows about your condition. See travel insurance for seniors.
