The short answer

Most big ships are easy to get around, with elevators, ramps and accessible cabins. The hard parts are usually off the ship: tender boats, steep gangways and old port towns. Plan those in advance and a cruise works well with limited mobility.

Wheelchair accessible cruises

Every major cruise line has wheelchair-accessible cabins, with wider doors, roll-in showers and grab bars. They are few on each ship, so book early. Help getting on and off is usually offered at the home port; on board, most lines expect you to bring or rent your own chair.

You can bring or rent a scooter on every major line. Check three things: will it fit your cabin door, is the battery allowed, and can it go ashore? Norwegian, for example, allows scooters up to 26 inches wide in a standard cabin, with gel-cell batteries.

If you walk slowly or use a walker, a cruise can still be easy. Book a cabin near an elevator, ask for wheelchair help at the terminal, choose docked ports over tender ports, and pick shore trips rated easy. Rest days at sea help too.

Tender ports, explained

In a tender port, the ship anchors off shore and small boats — tenders — carry guests to land. Most tenders need you to manage a few steps. Motorized chairs may not be allowed, and if you cannot go ashore, there is usually no refund for that port.

Most lines rate their shore tours by activity level. Choose easy or accessible-rated tours, ask about steps, surfaces and time on your feet, and remember that old towns with cobblestones and hills are harder than beach or panoramic tours.
